The Kingston-class consists of 30 coastal defence vessels operated by the Royal Canadian Navy. The class is the name for the Maritime Coastal Defence Vessel Project (MCDV). These multi-role vessels were built and launched from the early 2000s. Their main missions are coastal surveillance, sovereignty patrol, route survey, and training. The Kingston has a carbon fiber hull and is equipped with a dedicated mine-hunter ROV on a specially-designed rear deck, while also using special mine-hunting sonars. In addition, space on the deck forward of the ROV deck allows for four modules, about the size of 20-foot shipping containers, to be fitted for other duties. The Kingston-class use Z-drive azimuth thrusters and have incredible maneuverability. They also have lithium-ion batteries, allowing the ships to move for some distance virtually silently. The Kingston-class is also armed with a Bofors 57mm gun, x 30mm Goalkeeper CIWS system and a pair of 12.7mm machine guns. They have a top speed of 19 knots.
