The KMS Deutschland at sea.

The Deutschland was the lead ship of the Deutschland-class heavy cruisers in the Kriegsmarine from its commissioning in 1933 to June 26, 1941 when it was sunk during the Battle of Kristiansand.[1]

In September 1938, the Deutschland under the command of Admiral Günther Lütjens led a small group of vessels including light cruisers Köln and Stuttgart. Around 17:31 (Berlin time), the task force encountered a group of British battlegroup composed of various warships including the dreadnoughts HMS Nelson, HMS Rodney, HMS Royal Oak, HMS Royal Sovereign, and HMS Ramillies in the North Sea.[2]
