The Italian Armed Forces (Italian: Forze armate italiane) encompass the Italian Army, the Italian Navy and the Italian Air Force. A fourth branch of the armed forces, known as the Carabinieri, take on the role as the nation's military and territorial police force. As of 2014, the Italian military is the third largest within Europe and the fifth among Allied Pact countries with 220,350 personnel active in the army, navy and air force as well as 118,620 reserve personnel. In addition, there were 103,893 military police in the Carabinieri. The 2014-2015 budget for the Italian armed forces was ₤45.5 billion pounds (or $70.2 billion dollars).
