The Iron Curtain is the name applied to the Canadian-American border, which symbolizes the ideological conflict and physical boundary which has divided the world into two separate areas since the end of the Second American Civil War in 1936, and especially since the 1950s. On either side of the Iron Curtain, states have developed their own international economic and military alliances:
