The Indonesian Civil War (Indonesian: Perang Saudara Indonesia), sometimes referred to as the Indonesia War, was a Cold War military conflict that occurred in Indonesia, Malaya, Timor Leste, the Philippines, the Netherlands and Australia from 1966 to August 17, 1976. This war was fought between communist rebels, supported by the Wake Island Association, particularly the People's Republic of China, and the government of Indonesia, supported by the Allied Pact. A united front of communist groups, led by the Communist Party of Indonesia, fought a guerrilla war from 1966 until 1972, at which point communists launched a massive attack against government forces, seizing several islands and declaring independence as the People's Republic of Indonesia. The Indonesian government asked the Allied Pact to intervene, and beginning on November 1, 1972, Allied combat forces entered the war. The conflict spilled over to nearby countries, with combat occurring in British Malaya, Timor-Leste, the Philippines, Dutch West Timor, and the Australian state of Papua New Guinea.

After 1972, the American government viewed involvement in the war as a threat to their diplomatic position and ceased to supply the communist forces - a move which alienated the PRC, the only country to recognize the People's Republic of Indonesia, and eventually led to the Sino-American Split.
