Hokkaidō Ainu Autonomous Province (Japanese: 北海道アイヌ自治州 Hokkaidō Ainu Jichi-shū) is the northernmost province of East Japan and the largest by land area at 130,047 km². Hokkaidō Province is designated as a homeland for the Ainu people, but Ainu make up only 3.6% of the population; most inhabitants are Yamato Japanese. Made up of the former Hokkaidō and Karafuto prefectures, Hokkaidō Province includes the island of Hokkaidō, the Kuril Islands and the southern part of Sakhalin Island. It has a population of 5,462,793 and its provincial capital is Sapporo.
